DIY Mini Wreaths

for under $1 each…

Have you seen the kitchen trend where people hang mini wreaths from their cabinets? I actually love this trend. Kitchens are hard enough to decorate as is, but anytime you can add Christmas to the scene it makes for pure joy! I decided to give it a shot, but I found out real quick that I was going to DIY the whole thing…

I mean, why are mini wreaths so expensive anyway? They are tiny. I looked on Etsy and saw some that were $50 for a set of three. (I needed 9 so I knew it was time to get out the craft supplies.) I totally understand that not everyone likes to DIY but this is project that anyone can do, yes, even YOU!

Here’s what you need:

  • Garland (I used what I already had on hand)

  • Ribbon (I DIY’d mine, full details for that HERE) I used 2.5 inch wide cotton ribbon.

  • Wire Ornament Hooks

  • Scissors (if your garland is thick, you may need wire cutters)

  • Measuring Tape

  • Painters Tape (This is safe for painted or stained cabinets.)

  • Craft Glue Dots (optional)

Are you ready to get crafty? Here’s the how to:

  1. Cut your garland to size. I measured and cut 19 inch garland sections in order to get a 7.5 inch hoop for my wreath. When using standard garland like shown above, you will have a little bit of a mess when cutting. It doesn’t shed for long though!

  2. Form your wreath. Lay one of the garland sections flat so you can see how it wants to lay. Then make a circle the size you want. Attach the two ends together by twisting on a straightened ornament hook. (Twist it tight like you are putting away a loaf of bread!) If you have excess garland after tying it together then just cut it off with scissors or wire cutters. You may have to fluff your wreath it a little to get the shape right! Once you have the first one the way you like it, you can use it as a template as you make the rest of the wreaths.

  3. Cut your ribbon to size. I measured and used 39 inches of ribbon for each of my longer upper cabinets and 32 inches of ribbon for each of the shorter upper cabinets. I DIY’d my ribbon as well, but there are lots of options online. I’ll be sharing a blog post for that soon! I used 2.5 inch wide ribbon. If you are using all cotton ribbon (with no wire) then you may want to iron the ribbon before you add the wreath to it.

Now you’re ready to hang that wreath! (If you need help with this part, I recorded a video and shared it on our IGTV videos on Instagram.)

  1. Take one of your ribbon sections and loop it through your wreath.

  2. Hang it over the cabinet door, center it and tape it to the cabinet using Painters Tape.

  3. To get the ribbon to lay flat, place one Glue Dot in between the ribbon strands to “tape” them to each other. (Do not put the glue dot on the cabinet, only in between doubled up ribbon.

  4. Tweak it until you get the height you want! From the top of my cabinet door to the bottom of my wreath is about 17.5 - 18 inches.

So how much did this cost me? Let’s be generous and say .60 cents per wreath! You read that right. That’s under $1 per wreath! (.20 cents per garland + .33 cents per ribbon + paint, glue dot, hook and tape) After Christmas I will look for deals on a more realistic garland and do a little refresh next year. Otherwise, these can be used year after year! It took maybe 15 minutes to hang them. Well worth it for weeks of joy around here!

I really hope you’ll give this a try! It’s so simple and adds some fun in the kitchen! If you DIY it, make sure to let me know. Post a picture and be sure to tag so I don’t miss it!

Happy Wreath Making,

Megan
